My top 5 pubs in Newcastle

In this blog post I want to try something different and give you all a little insight into the watering holes you may well see me visit in Newcastle.

I moved to Newcastle in 2015 and I have really enjoyed my time living here. The city is very compact with lots going on. You have everything you need in a relatively small area - a vibrant city, amazing coastline / beaches and some great countryside in and around Newcastle and Northumberland. It also helps that it doesn’t break the budget too much either. According to Expatistan, London is 58% more expensive than Newcastle!

So anyway, back to the boozers!

I enjoy older style pubs (old man pubs as some might call them) that serve real ales or craft beers. Fortunately there are a lot of breweries in and around Newcastle (one of my favourites being Two by Two) so there is a lot to choose from.

Let’s get in to it in no particular order.

The Bridge Hotel

Centrally located, the Bridge Hotel is a cracking pub. Old style with cosy Victorian snugs, wooden panelling and stained glass windows. It has plenty beers to choose from and it also has a beer garden out the back with views onto the river.

The Bridge Tavern

A little walk down the hill underneath the iconic Tyne Bridge is the Bridge Tavern. It may not look like much from the outside but I love this pub - particularly its upstairs beer garden which as you can see in the picture below also features one of Newcastle’s "concrete bridges to nowhere” in the background :D.

They have lots of beers to choose from and they also brew their own beers on-site.

Crown Posada

Just a little walk up the street, the Crown Posada (one of Newcastle’s oldest and most famous pubs) awaits avid beer guzzlers. This pub has lots of character and was re-built way back in 1880. It has snugs, stained glass windows, mahogany bar, the lot. A true classic pub and well worth a visit.

The Tyne Bar

Now we are headed along the river to the Ouseburn where you will find a slightly trendier pub - the Tyne Bar. The Ouseburn is an up and coming area in Newcastle and the Tyne Bar is a big part of it. Lots of great beers and a bit of regular live music to wash it down with.

It also helps that there are some great food places in this area - including one of my favourites Kiln.

The Free Trade Inn

If the Tyne Bar is too trendy for you, don’t worry. The Free Trade is a classic pub that sits just up the hill from it. This pub has tremendous views across the river and you can just sit for hours having a sup on a pint as you take it all in.

OK so there we have it, my favourite pubs in Newcastle. There are many more amazing pubs that I have missed out here - Newcastle has a lot to offer in that sense but I hope these gave you a bit of a flavour.
